No clear favorite started the race, but many riders emerged as Grand Tour stars for the future. Stage winner's included Sean Yates, Gianni Bugno, Steve Bauer, Parra, Van Poppel, Da Silva, and Delgado. The 1988 Giro was a real breakthrough for team 7/11 and for American racing. Andy Hampsten would become the first and ONLY American rider to win the Pink Jersey after an epic ride over the Gavia Pass. Erik Breukink and Urs Zimmerman would fill the podium with names like Delgado, Chioccioli, Winnen, Visentini, and Alcala filling in the top 20.
